WAYS TO GIVE TO CAL MARITIME
There are several methods you can use to make a
tax-deductible, charitable gift to the Cal Maritime Fund. As you will see
from the list below, there is a good ‘way to give’ to meet the needs of everyone.
CASH: The most direct way to make a charitable gift is to write a check. You can make your check payable to The California
Maritime Academy Foundation and note, either on the lower right hand side of
the check, if you prefer that your gift be intended for a specific purpose (i.e. Class Reunion Gift, Annual Fund, Scholarships, Athletics, or one of many other special projects at the Academy).
CREDIT CARDS: An even easier way to give (and get flight
miles!) is to use a credit card. You can make you tax-deductible contribution online by clicking here or if you prefer, you can call Karen Spall in the Foundation office at (707) 654-1246.
MULTI-YEAR PLEDGES: The best way to make a larger charitable
gift is to make a multi-year pledge. Simply click here to download a copy of the pledge form to complete and mail to the CMA Foundation. If you have a question or need help about using the pledge form, contact Silvia Regalado at sregalado@csum.edu or (707) 654-1299.
APPRECIATED PROPERTY, ESPECIALLY STOCKS AND BONDS: Making
charitable donations using property, especially stocks and bonds, can be a ‘tax
savvy’ way to go. The donor of appreciate property can deduct the market value
of their gift on the day it was legally transferred to the Academy rather than
their original cost. Of course, to achieve the tax benefit the donor should transfer
the asset directly to the Academy rather than selling the asset first.
In the case of stocks and bonds, all a donor has to do is
ask their broker to transfer the items to the Academy's account, and call and
let us know he has done that. It’s simple, quick and smart.
CHARITABLE TRUSTS: Larger gifts to class
reunion campaigns can be made by using charitable remainder trusts and
charitable lead trusts. These kinds of trusts can be financially beneficial to
the Academy and to the donor. As they are a little complicated, it is best to
call Tom Dunworth at (707) 654-1037 to discuss the details of how they work and
how they benefit the donor.
CHARITABLE BEQUESTS: Donors who name the Academy as a
beneficiary of their wills or living trusts can count the amount of their
“bequest” as part of the class campaign. To do so, donors should send a copy of
the page in their will or trust to the academy, or send a letter informing us
of the bequest and the approximate amount to be donated. Donors should be sure
to state in their will or trust that the gift is being made to the California
Maritime Academy Foundation.
PEOPLE WHO CAN HELP: If you have any questions about how to
make a gift, please feel free to call or email any of the members of the Advancement Office /California Maritime Academy Foundation.
